We’re bringing back our adult ballet class in Perry this fall!

Class starts Wednesday, September 6th at 6:15 pm and runs in 4-week sessions.

We’ve gotten a lot of questions about the adult class class since we dropped the fall schedule. If you’re curious about our teen/adult recreational ballet class at Genesee Dance Theatre, keep reading for answers to the most frequently asked questions!

Who can take adult ballet?

Any teen or adult student can take this class! There is no maximum age limit and we can adapt the material for a variety of special populations.

The class is best suited for adults and teens who want to enjoy ballet as a hobby without the commitment required for performance. If preferred, beginner teens can also join our beginner youth ballet classes. We find many teens just starting out with ballet prefer taking class with adults vs. dancing with younger kids.

Do I need prior dance experience to take adult ballet?

You need ZERO prior dance experience to take ballet class as an adult. We welcome dancers of all levels, whether you’re an absolute beginner or a dancer of many years. Our curriculum will meet you where you are, offering a rewarding and challenging experience!

We hear a lot of prospective adult dancers express fear that they’re not “graceful” or coordinated enough to take ballet. The good news? It doesn’t matter at all. As long as you’re willing to try, listen and learn, we want you in class?

What should I expect in class?

Every adult ballet class at Genesee Dance includes four parts: warm-up, barre, center and cool down.

  • Warm -up: Dynamic stretching and mobility exercises to get you ready to dance.

  • Barre: 30 minutes of learning and practicing ballet exercises and steps while holding on to the barre. Here, you’ll focus on alignment, coordination and learning new ballet concepts.

  • Center floor: 30 minutes applying new concepts to dancing in the center floor. This part of class includes both slow, controlled exercises (adagio), along with quicker, explosive jumps and traveling steps (allegro).

  • Cool down: We finish each class with a deep stretch to restore mind and body.

Note: Some of our adult students prefer to avoid jumps and other high impact movements. This is totally acceptable. You’ll still have plenty to do and practice!

What do I need to wear to adult ballet?

Put down the tutu and take off the tiara! You don’t need to buy any specific or fancy gear to take our adult ballet class.

We do recommend purchasing a pair of ballet slippers. Ballet shoes allow you to use your feet properly for ballet and are less slippery than socks. You can order our recommended brand online here or stop in for a fitting before your first class.

If you want to go traditional, you’re welcome to wear a leotard and tights or other attire designed specifically for dance. You can also just wear anything comfortable that allows you to move well and feel great. Typically, most of our adult students wear  athletic leggings and a lightweight top.

How long is each class? What is the cost?

Adult ballet class meets for one hour, one time per week. We encourage our adult students to supplement their class with our Pilates and barre classes, if they want more class time.

Cost: Each 4 week session is $65. If you join mid-session, your fee will be prorated accordingly.

We ask that all students commit to a minimum of 4 weeks of attendance. This allows the class to progress from week to week. Missed classes can’t be rolled over to future months, but we will work with you to arrange an appropriate make-up class if you like.

Ready to start your ballet journey as an adult?

Upon registration, you will receive an email with a link to pay your first class session fee. A $25 deposit is required to reserve your spot, which will be applied to your first session balance. You may sign up for autopay with a credit card or pay by cash, check or bank transfer. Payment is due by the time of your first class.
